When I began purchasing artwork for my home, I was overwhelmed. However, I gained confidence as I learned to look for art that reflected my inner self and complimented the interior of my home at the same time. I started by looking at the various type of artwork available. I found the Internet to be an invaluable source of information. Websites afforded me the ability to view as many pieces as I desired without any time constraints. Additionally, I went to museums and art galleries to make myself more aware of past and current styles and which artists caught my attention.
There are several factors to keep in mind before you purchase any artwork. First, artwork should fit whatever space you have selected for it. If the piece is too large, it will overwhelm the room. If it too small, it will be lost. Measure the space you have to hang the art and leave enough space around it so the artwork will not feel overcrowded. A good way of doing this is using newspaper cut to the dimensions you desire and hang it in your space. If it does not look right, then you can easily change the dimensions before committing to any particular piece of art.
Second, you want to artwork to compliment the décor in your home. The best way to do this is by selecting one or two of the most dominant colors in you room and looking for pieces that have these colors in them. They do not have to exactly match. As a matter of fact, if they do match, the art may not be noticed because of the other room features. The complimenting colors give the sense that time and thought were spent in room and tie all of the decorating aspects together. Don’t forget that the frame styles should also reflect the style of the home.
The third thing to remember is a general rule when picture hanging or hanging artwork. The center of a picture should hang so it is at eye level, but do not be afraid to experiment. If you really like a piece and it looks out of place, move it. If you can’t find a better place, adjust the surroundings to compliment the picture to your satisfaction. Also, don’t forget that lighting is important. If you hang a piece in the dark, nobody will be able to enjoy it.
Take your time. Figure out what type of artwork reflects who you are as a person and compliments the interior design of your home. Keep looking until you find the perfect painting because it is relationship that a collection is built on for many people and an investment in you future.
